Electrophoretic introduction of cyclic 3',5'-AMP into the neurones of the edible snail with a current ~ 10-9 A passed between two intracellular electrodes using a photogenerator well insulated from earth leads in a considerable number of large neurones to depolarization and increase in the frequency of spontaneous activity which are maintained for several seconds after switching off the current. Intracellular introduction of 5-AMP and 5' -ATP and extracellular application of 3',5'-AMP with the same and a tenfold greater current does not change the spontaneous activity of the same neurones.
